The leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) endemic to Sri Lanka is threatened due to loss of habitat, many human activities and lack of understanding. Hatton Plantation Company conducted this program as a sustainable and environmentally concern company with the aim of saving these leopards which are a resource of our country.
The aim of this program was to reduce the number of death reports of mountain leopards and reduce the threat. Improper activities of the estate community is the main reason for that.
Snare Removal and Leopard education and awareness programs were conducted for estate management, communities ( workers, Non workers) , school students, estate youth .
13 programs covering all the company’s estates were conducted through this special program, reaching over 680 participants.
we were collaborating with the WNPS ( Wildlife and Nature Protection Society) Rainforest Alliance (RA) , Department of Wildlife Conservation ( DWC), Department of Forest Conservation ( DFC) to enhance knowledge of the estate community.
At the end of the program each participant was given a certificate of participation and leaflet.
